I really liked how the liver Reg today talked to patients with alcohol dependency, he was very empathetic and respectful. One thing that stuck out to me was he said: ‘I don’t think there’s any such thing as people being ‘better’ than others. Just that some people are more fortunate. I’m not better than someone because I’m not an alcoholic, I’ve just had an easier life than them.’
Something I also like that the consultant does - when there’s just been an end-of-life discussion with the family (and there are quite a few of these on hepatology) she offers them a drink afterwards. They’re obviously often very shaken and in tears, and look so grateful for the offer. Then she actually goes and makes the cups of tea for them, even though we’re in the middle of a long, busy ward round. It’s the little things sometimes.
